Quartzene provides fire protection for surface treatment of wood – Positive project result for Svenska Aerogel Holding AB (publ)
The project aiming to develop a transparent clearcoat system for wood with fire protection has been completed. The results show that Quartzene provides the highest fire protection class for wood (Euroclass B).
The primary result of the project is a clearcoat system for indoor use. The result will be transformed into a package consisting of formulations and guidelines based on commercially available binders and Quartzene as a key ingredient. The package will be offered to manufacturers of industrial paint systems for surface treatment of construction products, who in turn can quickly introduce finished and validated products to their customer base. A stated goal for the project is to partially replace costly impregnation methods with surface treatment, and if this succeeds, it will mean a change in technology and can also affect the value chain.
Continued development is required to adapt the system for outdoor use, as this is generally more demanding due to strongly varying exposure to sunlight and moisture. The raw materials for the system are mainly based on silicon, which is one of the earth’s most common elements. No other flame retardant additives are included, which is why the chemical footprint is small.
The initial hypothesis testing began in 2017 and was part-financed by Bioinnovation (Vinnova, the Swedish Energy Agency and Formas). Svenska Aerogel AB, Worlée-Chemie, Germany, Rise Research Institutes of Sweden and Linnaeus University have participated in the project. The project team will further develop the system to cope with outdoor exposure, which would increase the potential.
With Quartzene, Svenska Aerogel has a sustainable performance additive with great opportunities to contribute to sustainable solutions in a number of areas. The material is heat and sound insulating, reduces weight, does not burn and can absorb a number of substances that you want to filter out. A solution in fire protective coatings may open up a number of different business opportunities that will create value for both the company and its customers.
