QUARTZENE – FOR BOOSTED INTUMESCENT PAINT

Intumescent paint – effective passive fire protection

In densely populated urban areas and high-rise buildings, the potential for rapid fire spread presents a significant risk to life and property. Intumescent paint, enhanced with Quartzene, mitigates this risk by delaying structural damage and enhancing fire resistance, thus providing vital extra time for evacuation and firefighting efforts. Upon exposure to fire, the paint expands from a thin coating into a thick, flame-resistant foam. This foam then solidifies into a protective char, offering substantial heat insulation to the underlying material.

Quartzene boosts fire protection to meet safety standards.

Structural steel weakens above 500°C, risking collapse. Responding to stricter safety regulations, Quartzene aerogel boosts the effectiveness of intumescent paint, offering improved char stabilization and thermal shielding for enhanced fire protection.

Quartzene intumescent paint high-performing during testing

A market-leading waterborne intumescent paint system was benchmarked against a version where Quartzene was post-added and evaluated in a mini-oven with a standard temperature-time fire at Research Institutes of Sweden (RISE), according to ISO 834. In this study, we explored the potential for improving the paint system’s performance through the addition of Quartzene.

The results showed:

  • The temperature difference increased by 7% after 60 minutes, when comparing to the benchmark and normalized to the applied dry film thickness.
  • The formed char with Quartzene was mechanically tougher, which helps the formed insulation layer stay intact.
