Italy faces a significant challenge when it comes to energy efficiency in its building sector. According to the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA), more than 60% of the country’s residential buildings were constructed before 1976 – before any energy-saving regulations were in place1. This means a large share of buildings still lack proper insulation and modern energy performance standards.
At the same time, the International Energy Agency (IEA) highlights that improving energy efficiency in buildings is essential for Italy to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and lower emissions2. The building sector remains a major contributor to national energy consumption, and renovation is seen as a key strategy to meet climate targets.
Energy efficiency through thermal insulation coatings
Thermal insulation coatings are ideal for Italy’s traditional stone buildings, enhancing indoor comfort and energy efficiency while respecting their historical heritage.
To support this transition, our distributor Krahn Italy’s customer – a major Italian paint producer – has selected Quartzene® for their new thermal insulation coating system. The product is specifically designed to meet the challenges of Italy’s existing stone buildings. It offers a lightweight thermal barrier that enhances thermal insulation, energy efficiency, and indoor comfort. The formulation also corrects thermal bridges – key points of heat loss – further improving insulation performance. Designed for quick and easy application, it minimizes disruption during renovation. The customer’s formulation also provides protection against moisture and mold, ensuring the longevity of stone structures.
Customer-focused development and technical support
“We believe that the topic of thermal efficiency is crucial for different leading coating producers and several projects are ongoing. Aerogels and Quartzene® is the right technological answer to this specific market need,” says Alessandro Demicheli, Business Segment Manager at Krahn Italy.
In addition to ongoing projects, Krahn Italy are supporting several other clients who are testing and developing similar applications using Quartzene®. Technical support is also available through the company’s laboratory in Lainate, where customers can access expert guidance and a complete package of products tailored to their formulation needs.
